Jan is passionate about making this planet a better place for us all. When he was 8 years old Jan founded an environmental group in his home town. Since then he devoted his entire career to this mission - for the last 19 years Jan has been working towards creating a clean, fair and efficient energy system as a policy advisor, consultant, researcher, and volunteer. Jan is a Principal and Director of European Programmes at the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP), a global team of highly-skilled energy experts. He is responsible for all aspects of leadership, management, and financial viability of RAP’s work in Europe.
Jan has several board appointments. He sits on the board of the European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (eceee) and is a member of the Steering Committee of the Coalition for Energy Savings and the Build Upon2 Advisory Board. Jan is a co-host of the "Watt Matters" podcast.
In recognition of his work within the field, Jan was named one of the world's top 25 energy and top 15 sustainability influencers by Onalytica and one of the 10 LinkedIn Top Green Voices in the UK. He was elected to be a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for his “longstanding dedication to moving the UK towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future” as well as a fellow of the Energy Institute via the Eminence Route to acknowledge his "personal achievements in energy and contribution to the sector".
Jan also has a passion for energy research. He is an Honorary Research Associate at Oxford University's world-renowned Environmental Change Institute, an Associate Fellow at Sussex Energy Group (SEG) of SPRU, University of Sussex and at the Free University of Berlin. Jan's work has resulted in more than 150 technical reports and publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and trade magazines.
Jan regularly presents on invitation as a keynote speaker at national and international conferences with past speaking engagements including the International Energy Agency, the World Economic Forum, the European Parliament, Chatham House and the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators. He has been appointed to be a Special Advisor to the House of Commons' Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee and has been asked to testify as an expert witness on numerous occasions to the House of Commons and the European Parliament. Jan has been interviewed by the New York Times, Forbes, Time Magazine, the Hill, WIRED, the BBC, ZDF, Deutsche Welle, the Times, El Pais, The Guardian, The Telegraph and Bloomberg. He holds a PhD from Oxford University and an MSc from the London School of Economics. Jan also completed executive training at Cambridge University and at the Florence School for Regulation.
